LGBT Veterans to March in Veterans Day Parade

k-bigpicSaturday, November 9, 2013 will bear witness as the City of Lake Worth honor veterans in the annual Lake Worth Veterans Day Parade.

The parade will start at the corner of Lucerne and Federal Highway at 11AM and a reception is scheduled from 1PM to 2PM at the Cultural Plaza, 414 Lake Avenue.

BLAST (Bi, Lesbian and Straight Together), Women of the Palm Beaches and the local Veterans Administration  will sponsor the LGBT contingent of the parade.

“You do not need to be a veteran to participate in this parade – the more the merrier when it comes to honouring our veterans,” says BLAST organizer Toni Armstrong. “It’s free to march and we welcome everyone who would like to march with us.”

Armstrong further explained how BLAST became involved with the event.

“BLAST has over 1,300 members, several of whom are veterans,” she says. “For the past few years, BLAST has sponsored its own annual BLAST Salute to Veterans. When BLAST leader Mary Chase got hired by the VA to specialize in LGBT issues, it was a natural fit for the two groups to collaborate on finally establishing an official LGBT contingent in the Lake Worth parade.”

She also says it’s exciting to celebrate the overturning of the Don’t Ask; Don’t Tell policy that had caused so much harm to many service people.

A wide variety of ages, genders and backgrounds made up last year’s LGBT contingent including, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender veterans as well as family members and friends of veterans.

Although military gear is encouraged, it’s not required for LGBT veterans who would like to join this year’s parade. No preregistration is required for the LGBT contingent.

Updates regarding the LGBT contingent will be posted at the BLAST website as the day for the parade gets closer.
