WILTON MANORS—One man was considered a South Florida legend for devoting many decades to teaching swimming safety to thousands of adults and children. The other was a charismatic and talented photographer whose exhibits featured pictures of his travels abroad. Jonathan Ofciarcik, whose nickname was “Johnny O.,” and Michael Brooks were partners for about 30 years, lived in gay Wilton Manors and were both found dead recently, miles apart from each other at two homes in Broward County. Their relatives, neighbors and friends were mourning them Friday, and remembering them as two outstanding people.
“I don’t know how they would have survived without each other,” said Ofciarcik’s sister, Roberta Patience, 57, of San Antonio, Texas. “They complemented each other so well.”
Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors police are awaiting results from the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office to determine what caused the partners’ deaths, police said.
