Well it appears like the lightening speed of changes across the nation with marriage equality is starting to finally arrive in the Sunshine State. With recent rulings in both Monroe & Miami-Dade counties are only the tip of the iceberg. The city of Wilton Manors will host a Wedding Expo with the LGBT community in mind.
The event will take place August 17th in Hagen Park community center and will bring together pretty much every related industry that caters to weddings. With companies that represent food and catering, banquet halls, limousine service, hotel and many others will be there. In a state second only to California for LGBT tourisms especially South Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Miami & Miami Beach and Key West its no surprise that local businesses will want to benefit.
“Being a gay man myself, I thought, you know what? I had better grab ahold of this opportunity,” said Kyser, owner of Panache Style in Wilton Manors.
Kyser has done six same-sex wedding receptions so far this year. “They can be very avant-garde,” Kyser said. An event he handled recently for a lesbian couple featured a drag queen who circulated through the room in a massive gown that doubled as a rolling table with guest placecards.
Kyser is hoping the showcase will turn into an annual event, marketed to same-sex couples who will want to combine planning their wedding with taking a tropical vacation. The event’s main sponsor is the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, which launched its first ad campaign targeting gay and lesbian tourists 18 years ago.
Gay Nuptials, A Wedding Showcase, will be from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Hagen Park Community Center, 2020 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. Tickets: $20 a person. Admission proceeds are going to The Pride Center in Wilton Manors. Info: 954-356-9377; 954-356-9377 or visit www.mygaywedding.org
