Strike a Pose: South Florida’s Ballroom Scene @ STONEWALL MUSEUM

Supporters and guests of the Stonewall Society circle of donors to Stonewall National Museum & Archives are cordially invited to attend a private VIP reception of the exhibition opening Strike A Pose: South Florida’s Ballroom Community. Catering by B Catered. Presented with generous support from Ketel One Vodka and Barefoot Wine and Bubbly.

This is not your fathers “ballroom”. Coinciding with the Southern Comfort conference hosted in Fort Lauderdale, one of the largest gatherings of the transgender community in the world, this exhibit documents the creation and development of the gay underground ballroom “vogue” scene in South Florida. With explorations of gender, race and social class served up with attitude as young participants walk the runway, exposure to this LGBT subculture has been limited, for most, to Madonna’s 1990 hit single “Vogue”, and the 1991 documentary, Paris is Burning. This Stonewall exhibition will provide a deeper appreciation of the modern drag culture, styles, and catwalk performances that continue to inspire, and support the creativity of a proudly resilient gay subculture in South Florida.

Strike a Pose: South Florida’s Ballroom Scene @ STONEWALL MUSEUM runs September 3rd-October 3rd
